Just because a food product says its real or natural means nothing. In fact, I am suspect that it is far from real.
Case in point. I've just returned from a road trip with my hubby to visit a number of friends. Being a foodie, I can feel comfortable in anyone's kitchen making breakfast, lunch or dinner. In the three kitchens I maneuvered about these past 10 days, I found three jars of Best Foods Mayonnaise.
Just to clarify, I define real food as products with healthy plant-based ingredients. So lets see what's actually in Best Foods Mayo.
Soybean Oil
That right there makes me want to drop the jar and run the other direction. Soybeans constitute the largest genetically modified (GM) crop. If it doesn't say organic, it's genetically modified. Be informed and learn the dangers of GMOs to our food supply. Watch Genetic Roulette.
Whole Eggs and Egg Yolks
Doesn't say organic, which can only mean that those eggs come from chickens that are fed GM feed, and likely given antibiotics. And we wonder why we are beset with super bugs that are resistant to antibiotics.
Sugar
This means its either made from sugar beets or corn. Pick your poison. Both are genetically modified: 90% of sugar beets in the US and 88% of corn.
If you're interested in seeing just how much the US has bought into GM crops, here's a graph of genetically engineered crops reported by the USDA. Not a good report for Americans fighting an increase of cancers and other modern-day diseases.
Calcium Disodium EDTA
Used to prevent spoilage by protecting the food from oxygen. It is toxic to humans in large amounts. Just how much is a large amount is not what I care to find out.
All the years we've eaten Organic Mayonnaise without calcium disodium EDTA, I've never had my mayonnaise spoil. And we don't use it a lot so the jar is in the fridge a long time.
Natural Flavors
This ingredient is a recipe for all kinds of hidden bad stuff. Like MSG and aspartame. Not the best and not real.
So you see just how real this mayo is not!
I suggest Trader Joe's Organic Mayonnaise or Spectrum Organic Mayonnaise.
What's your "favorite" un-real food?
